A chef is a person who cooks professionally. In a professional kitchen setting, the term is used only for the one person in charge of everyone else in the kitchen — the "executive chef." Word historyThe word "chef" (from Latin caput) is the abbreviated form of the French phrase chef de cuisine, the "chief" or "head" of a kitchen. The title chef in the culinary profession originates from the roots of haute cuisine in the 19th century. The English-language use of the word chef has become a term that is sometimes used to mean any professional cook, regardless of rank. TitlesBelow are various titles given to those working in a professional kitchen and each can be considered a title for a type of chef. Many of the titles are based on the brigade de cuisine (or brigade system) documented by Auguste Escoffier, while others have a more general meaning depending on the individual kitchen. Not all restaurants will use these titles as each establishment may have its own set guidelines to organization. Specialized and hierarchal chef titles are usually found only in fine-dining, upscale restaurants; kitchen-staff members at casual restaurants such as diners are more often called "cook" or "short-order cook". You know that anyone can attend a cooking school but not everyone will come away with an educated palate. Being a student of the art, you also know that in addition to your level of proficiency regarding prior experience, technique and comprehension, a major factor is an expanded concept on your part of basic food, i.e., for the family barbecue you would stuff a roasted Idaho with bacon and cheddar...for a dinner of importance you'd tourne and braise yukon gold's in court bouillon, flash roast them in butter and serve with sevruga, creme fraiche and chive, or something to that degree and beyond. It's an ability to perceive the more important flavors, and ingredients and use them in an innovative way. I have been at this for 20 years and… [cont.] Answered by Lexi - Thu Nov 2 00:34:56 2006 What Experience Do I Need To Become a Chef? And What Schools are Available in CANADA?

While in high school, try to find a job in a kitchen, maybe as a volunteer too. Even working as a waiter in a restaurant will help you gain knowledge in cooking. p.s.
