The Greeks (Greek: Έλληνες, [ˈe̞line̞s]), also known as Hellenes, are a nation and ethnic group native to Greece, Cyprus and neighbouring regions. They also form a significant diaspora, with Greek communities established around the world. Greek colonies and communities have been historically established in most corners of the Mediterranean, but Greeks have always been centred around the Aegean Sea, where the Greek language has been spoken since antiquity. Until the early twentieth century, Greeks were uniformly distributed between the Greek peninsula, the western coast of Asia Minor, Pontus, Egypt, Cyprus and Constantinople; many of these regions coincided to a large extent with the borders of the Byzantine Empire of the late 11th century and the Eastern Mediterranean areas of the ancient Greek colonization. In the aftermath of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), a large-scale population exchange between Greece and Turkey transferred and confined ethnic Greeks almost entirely into the borders of the modern Greek state and Cyprus. Other ethnic Greek populations can be found from southern Italy to the Caucasus and in diaspora communities in a number of other countries. Today, most Greeks are members of the Greek Orthodox Church. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why did the Ancient Greeks have such a contemptuous attitude to foreign language and literature? Q. Just as their scientific achievement was limited by their lack of interest in experimentation, so their achievement in knowing other people's culture and history was limited by their lack of interest in foreign languages. No Greek author of the classical or hellenistic period ever learnt a foreign language. They relied on interpreters. In Egypt, Greeks trained Egyptians to learn Greek, not the other way round. Hence the many ludicrous mistakes of Greek writers in foreign names and information. This cannot be just an imperial attitude. In the British Empire, colonial administrators were encouraged to learn native languages and several made great progress in scholarship. Q. Personally, I feel without their philosophers, we may not have modern science/philosophy today. But, other than that, what do you personally feel Greeks have brought to you? Art, Theater, music? Asked by Ally, THAT girl - Thu Sep 11 23:18:59 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I feel the biggest impact is the idea of cities. The Greeks were arguably the first to congregate in areas in the masses, to build themselves into a city so that they could spend their time developing ideas and improving the race rather than trying to spend all their time surviving. The Greeks saw cities as an escape from the wild and this allowed development within the human species. I would say that this is perhaps the biggest impact of the ancient Greeks as it directly effects the modern world.
