How long does it take for a Chicken to hatch?
Q. I am hatching some Seabrights. They are very small chickens. Will they hatch earlier than 21 days because they are a smaller breed. I know that with call ducks they hatch 2-3 days earlier than regular ducks because they are smaller. I cant find this information anywhere. Please answer me. Do smaller chickens hatch earlier than larger ones? Mine are due on April 5th. I am also hatching Silver Searbrights, Delwares, Key West Chickens, and Aracunas (I dont know if this is the right spelling). Thanks for you answer Tris. Well today is day 19 and one of the seabrights is hatching. There is a little peep hole and you can hear the chick peeping. Yay. I cant wait for them to hatch. Another seabright is pipping a hole. A. Your right about there not being enough info on this! i even looked for you but found nothing! but just out of "eggspiriance" I can tell you that they probably will hatch the same as the other chickens! bantams are super small and they hatch in 21 days! but watch out just in case they do hatch early! (if they do it won't be nothing but 1 or 2 days!) i'm having two chickens sit on eggs (a buff orpington and a australorp) and they are do on Easter! i didn't know that they would fall on Easter until later! perfect timing! The best of luck with your little seabrights! they will be darling! Keep in touch! Tris

How can you hatch an egg for outdoors without an incubator?
Q. I found an egg (im not sure the type)in my yard, it couldnt have fallen from a tree it was in the middle of a yard, an animal must have stolen it from a nest it is small, about an inch and a half long and white, it is all intact and i dont have an incubator how can i make it hatch?

A. Really you do need an incubator to keep the egg at the right temp 37.2 celcius and humidity at about 40% plus an eeg needs to be turned reguarly to prevent the bub from sticking to the shell so as you can see its not easy unless you have the gears. Also when bub hatches they need to be kept at a constant temp and be feed special handreaing food for parrots and keets it 2 hourly feeds for 10 days. to start with and with wild birds it can be every 1/2 hour or so... its a big undertaking with out the right gears and know how

Is it normal for ducks to hatch with some of its yolk still attached?
Q. I have had 4 ducks hatch with the yolk sac still attached to their bellies? At first I thought I had the humidity too high, but the last egg I hatched did not have near the humidity in the incubator and it still hatched attached. All have lived, but is this normal for them to hatch with the yolk attached?
Asked by Debra L - Wed Nov 14 00:22:32 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is not normal. The yoke has essential nutrients for the duckling. The yoke should be drawn into the body before hatching. I agree with the first answer that the temp might have been to high, this can cause eggs to hatch to early most ducks should hatch at 28 days. temp should be 99.5 degrees. humidity 60%. Good Luck with your Ducks!

How long does it take for baby turtles to hatch?
Q. A turtle just laid its eggs in our backyard (we live right on a pond), and my family and I were wondering how long they'll take to hatch and what the chances are of us actually catching it. Do they usually hatch at night? During the day? Is there any way for us to know when we should start looking for them?
Asked by marilyn - Sun Jun 15 17:43:29 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Incubation takes about two months. The length of incubation and the gender of the hatchling depends on the temperature of the sand. Darker sands maintain higher temperatures, decreasing incubation time and increasing the frequency of female hatchlings. When the eggs hatch (usually daytime), the babies dig their way out of the sand and head for the water.

A. It varies by species..but most passerines (perching birds) take approximately 2 weeks to hatch their eggs, and usually another 2 weeks before the young leave the nest. If the nest is active and the parents are still attending to it, it would actually be illegal for you to remove it as all native birds are protected by law. I am glad you decided to give them a chance! You can watch it from afar to see if the parent or parents are going to it, to see if it has for SURE been abandoned. If they see you nearby..they will not come. You have to watch for a while though as they may stay off the nest for 20-30 minutes at a time. Once you are able to remove the nest...you will need to block off the entrance the bird used to get in there so that… [cont.]

How long it takes a pipevine swallowtail chrysalis to hatch?
Q. Does anyone know how long it takes a pipevine swallowtail chrysalis to hatch? Do they stay in throughout the winter? We have 20 chrysalises and weren't counting on long-term guests! Thanks in advance for any serious help. Thank you both very much. We started with 23 that we hatched from eggs (found on our Dutchman's pipe vine) and ended up with 20 successfully making the transition to chrysalis. Hopefully the groups we left outside to fend on their own are faring as well. We have seen many of them feeding, etc., but probably won't find the chrysalises until the leaves drop. Thank you both very much. We live in western Massachusetts and the swallowtail who layed these eggs is the first I ever saw here. We started with 23 that we hatched… [cont.]

A. Hmm... I've had experience with gulf fritillary and black swallowtail chrysalids and they took a couple weeks. According to Animal Diversity Web pipevine swallowtail chrysalids overwinter in colder regions or 'hatch' in a few weeks where it's warm.

Asked by seee - Tue May 22 11:42:32 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Fertile eggs will begin to hatch about 18 days from the date the female BEGINS incubating the eggs, which usually occurs with the second egg laid. Incubation is when the female sits on the eggs most of 24/7 (she'll come out of the nesting box to defecate, drink, and maybe eat, although the male feeds the female most of the time while she incubates the eggs/cares for the babies).

A. Lizards range from 60 to 220 days depending on species, a little more description might help, as I am not filmier with nick names. You did not ask you question in the reptile section, so it categorized your question using "EGGS" as the key word placing it in the "BIRDS" section. Try going to the reptile section and asking again :) Colohen

A. The eggs take 18 to 21 days to hatch from the moment she sat and incubated them ( kept them warm. ). She should not look weak unless she is sick. Pick her up and feel her bodyweight...is she lightweight ? Has she a sharp keelbone ? ( front of chest vertically ) . Has she a pooey bottom ? All these are signs of illness and or not eating. Two eggs isnt many...its unusual. Are the eggs fertile ? Here is a picture of some eggs t=efbb5fee.jpg note the colour of the egg on the left ? it is fertile. The egg on the right is NOT.

A. You really cant ell what kind it is by looking at the egg,ask your friend what kind of chicken layed the egg.Your egg will need more than heat to hatch,it needs a constant temperature and humidity and needs to be turned a few times a day until the 18th day.Do not turn after the 18th day!I Candle my eggs around day 10,ive found that this is a good time to see the embryo moving around inside so you know your egg is good.To candle your egg take it into a room that is completely dark and shine a flashlight through it,look at the egg on the oppisite side than the flashlight and see if your egg is any good.Good luck!

how do i hatch a cockatiel egg and care for it?
Q. a friend has birds that laid an egg. the male pecks the eggs, so another friend took the egg, since she has a cockatiel. she wants to hatch the baby and hand feed it. how is this done?
Asked by waynesworld111 - Mon Jan 2 02:44:16 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is a very, very difficult process and in all likelihood, the baby will not survive regardless of how well your friend cares for the egg. Baby birds are exceedingly fragile and can die in the shell from such small shocks that it's probably already gone. She needs to candle the egg - shine a penlight through it - to check the status of the egg and see if the chick is still, by some miracle, alive. Pecked or not, if the egg has been moved too quickly, bumped, or allowed to cool too much, the chick will die. Human body temperature is not warm enough to incubate a baby chick. If the chick's life is the main concern, your best bet is to give the egg to a hen that's already sitting on a clutch. If your friend tries to hatch it herself,… [cont.]

I am worried because two of those have just been poking their little snouts out all day without making any more progress. Are they just natural slowpokes or should I worry?
Asked by YamiNoSensei - Thu Jul 30 18:23:56 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I used to breed them. That is absolutely normal, don't try to help them in any way, let them emerge on their own. Many of mine would pip and stick out their noses but not be fully emerged until the next morning. Try to avoid checking on them really often. They will pull back into the egg when they are startled by sudden light and movement as well. Many of them may not feed until after their first shed so be prepared for that. Have fun and good luck with them!
