What is an alternative baby mourning dove food?
Q. I recently rescued a baby mourning dove from the jaws of my cat and tried to find a bird sanctuary. Being out in the middle of nowhere, I couldn't find one. I read that they eat from the mother's crop, and that there is a type of baby dove and pigeon food that you can buy from pet stores that you mix with water. No pet stores had this, so I really need to know how to make a baby dove mixture. Please no nonsense, this is serious!!! Thanks!!!

A. You do realize that a cat's saliva is poisonous to a bird? The product that you are looking for is Exact by Kaytee. Other than that there is no substitute for the dove's milk. There is no such thing as baby dove mixture.

How can I help my dog who is mourning over our other dog who has just passed?
Q. I had our beloved dog put down recently and my other dog is showing signs of mourning. How can I help him cheer up?

A. I had the same problem last summer. I had to put the love of my life down, we had another dog that I just refused to bond with, all my attention went to my dog. When I put him down I was completely devastated!!! I could not get out of bed or move! Little did I know that the other dog was depressed as well.(I really didn't think it was true). When I realized this is when I started bonding with her. I couldn't believe that she seemed to be as miserable as I was. I was actually starting to worry about her, so I called the vet, and he said to spend more time with her and give her alot more attention, it did work, and she has gotten over the hill now. Just give them more attention and take them places(walks, parks whatever) it will take time… [cont.]

What is the symbolic significance of seeing injured/dead mourning doves?
Q. Me and my significant other have seen two injured birds today, one looked like it was attacked by a cat, but okay, the other a few hours later, hit by a car and probably dead. Is there any symbolic significance in seeing injured birds? They were both mourning doves. Thanks!
Asked by Emma - Mon Jun 28 15:19:29 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, doves have typically been used to symbolize peace. If you came across this in literature, I'd say the author was trying to reference the demise of peace, or war and chaos. If the dove was obviously, killed, not just dead, I would say someone specifically trying to cause chaos. Since you only came across it in real life though, all it means is that animals walk out into the street and cats hunt birds.

What is the biological imperative for mourning?
Q. Many biological things can be explained by necessity, however i have not managed as of yet to develop a theory as to why mourning after a 'loved one' dies is needed or a compulsion doesn't seem as if it fits. It was a six step process that could last up to two days. 1) The ritual would began once the war party sent word back to camp announcing how many had been captured, then 2) The villagers waited for the prisoner and throw heavy painful blows; 3) the prisoners were stripped and old woman inflicted physical abuse; 4) After several hours, prisoners were allowed to rest and eat; but, they had to dance while the council decided their fate. 5) Then, they were presented to the grieving families. What does the TH stand for in a chester hallmark on a gold mourning brooch?
Q. I have recently acquired a 9ct yellow gold antique mourning brooch with a rose cut diamond set in the front & compartment in the back for either some hair or a photo. The Hallmark is Chester dated either 1909 or 1907 and the makers mark is TH ( although it could possibly be a TM but i dont think so). I have been researching but i cant seem to find out who the makers mark stands for. Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction of a website that can perhaps shed some light? Upon closer inspection, the makers mark is definitley a TH if this helps in anyway.

If there is death in the family, is it appropriate to have beauty treatments done during the mourning period?
Q. Women get things like shaping of eyebrows and waxing of upper lip done on a regular basis. If there is a sudden death in the family is it ok to get these things done during the traditional mourning period so that one looks groomed especially since there will be mourners visiting to offer condolences?
Asked by Kirr - Thu Jan 28 05:39:06 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Depends. From different cultures come different rules: women in Asia cut their hair when they lose loved one, in Europe we wear black. Some even (if you lose mother, brother, father or husband) do not tend to beautify themselves. The reason being: if you get beautiful, you might insult the passed one, and show him/her that you no longer sorrow. Or that you are already searching for another man/woman. This lasts one year (wearing black). As for makeup, that lasts for 40 days to a year. But some keep that for their entire life, with that showing there there is never going to be anyone else in their life. But, it is not like that all around globe.

Asked by jpugh22 - Sun Apr 13 21:45:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They will sit and "brood" them for the first 5 days or so to keep them warm..but once they are feathered enough to keep themselves warm they will just come to feed. One of the parents may still sit on the nest overnight or if the weather got bad or rain fell. They will continue to feed them in the nest until they fledge at around day 13-15, and will be cared for by the parents until they are around 25-27 days old. You could be missing their visits...they are probably out foraging for food. If neither has been there for two days the chicks would be dead. Also, make sure you are not too close to the nest..if they see you near it or watching them, they will not go to the nest as you would be considered a predator.
