A. An egg is a sealed system. The Law of Conservation of Matter says that matter can not be created or destroyed so the mass of the egg will not change.

Q. What makes performance art such as In Mourning and in Rage an effective means of communicating to the public? With that work, what, besides a press conference held afterward, made it such an effective statement?

A. Actually, I don't think it does. Its just another excuse to do what you want and make others believe its for their benefit. Kind of like modern art and selling snake oil.

What is an alternative baby mourning dove food?
Q. I recently rescued a baby mourning dove from the jaws of my cat and tried to find a bird sanctuary. Being out in the middle of nowhere, I couldn't find one. I read that they eat from the mother's crop, and that there is a type of baby dove and pigeon food that you can buy from pet stores that you mix with water. No pet stores had this, so I really need to know how to make a baby dove mixture. Please no nonsense, this is serious!!! Thanks!!!

A. You do realize that a cat's saliva is poisonous to a bird? The product that you are looking for is Exact by Kaytee. Other than that there is no substitute for the dove's milk. There is no such thing as baby dove mixture.

A. I had the same problem last summer. I had to put the love of my life down, we had another dog that I just refused to bond with, all my attention went to my dog. When I put him down I was completely devastated!!! I could not get out of bed or move! Little did I know that the other dog was depressed as well.(I really didn't think it was true). When I realized this is when I started bonding with her. I couldn't believe that she seemed to be as miserable as I was. I was actually starting to worry about her, so I called the vet, and he said to spend more time with her and give her alot more attention, it did work, and she has gotten over the hill now. Just give them more attention and take them places(walks, parks whatever) it will take time… [cont.]

Why do we see more daylight changes in the evening of the days, and not the same change in the mourning?
Q. I understand why the days get longer going into spring and such, but why do we seem to gain more daylight in the evening vs. the mourning? you would think the sun would set and rise in equal increments as we go into spring/summer.
Asked by Justin O - Tue Jan 27 22:02:49 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The earth is still not very far from it's perihelion. So it is orbiting faster this time of year than around its aphelion. So, daylight increases (for the northern hemisphere) this time of year, but beacuse our orbit is a little faster right now, local apparent noon is later than local mean noon. This makes the sunrise and sunset occur slightly later (right now) than they would if earth had an orbit that was a perfect circle. You should notice the reverse will be true after the summer solstice. Keyowrds to look up: Kepler's Second Law Analemma Local Apparent Noon Local Mean Noon Perihelion Aphelion Solstice

Could a Blue Jay have killed a baby Mourning Dove?
Q. Mourning Doves built a nest nearby, a baby was fully feathered and in the critical stage of life, learning how to fly. Today I walk outside and see a Blue Jay flying away from the dead baby Mourning Dove and it had blood coming out of its head. So sad.

A. Such is the way of nature cruel and kind.! Yes the Blue Jay will have killed the baby if you had not disturbed it then it would have probably eaten it,as a number of members of the Crow family have this killing and scavenging habit. Gruesome as may seem this is Nature.

A. A few weeks ago we spent time with family. As we hugged them goodbye, everyone got teary-eyed. Why do we do that? I mean, they're just across the country, right? By your rationale, it makes no sense. I mean, we even have the phone and were talking to them 5 hours later telling them we had arrived and were safe. Except that we know that it will be hard to see them again for a few more years, and we will miss them. When someone dies, we aren't going to see them for a long time. I remember, when my friend died, sobbing when I saw her empty shell of a body simply because it felt so empty instead of how she normally was. How can I help my Mourning Dove?
Q. I found a Mourning Dove yesterday, that was about 2 days old at the time, he was abandoned, as his parents had not been there for several days, and had fallen out of his nest. We took him home, put him in a little box with paper towels, on an electric heating mat. He has been eating fine, we feed him boiled egg, mixed and blended with water and a tiny bit of honey, sometimes he looks like he has something wrong with his wing and today, he lost the feathers on a bit of his wing and started bleeding. Our neighbour has vetting expirience, so we took him to see her, she told us that it is normal and sometimes this happens, but he has a puncture mark now, this is probably due to him falling out of a tree, during the wind we had, as we found him… [cont.]

A. Do not give the bird honey. Do not give the bird water. Take the bird to a licenses wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released back into the wild. Do not take the bird to a vet - vets are for pets and most do not have the expertise to deal with wild animals. They also do not have the proper licenses to keep a wild animal while it recouperates. Same goes for animal shelters, SPCA, humane society, etc. Do not attempt to keep this bird yourself. First of all it is illegal. All native… [cont.]

A. It is just like losing a human family member. It takes time to get over it. The pain never entirely leaves, it just gets easier to handle. Truthfully, a new puppy will help ease his broken heart. It will never take the place of Roscoe, but will find his own place in your hearts. So sorry about your loss.

A. Hi, If you go on the internet and do a search for "wildlife control supplies" they have a myriad of options just for this problem. Bird control is quite a common problem. For instance, every airport has to have a bird control program in place to prevent birds from striking the jet engines(believe me, im a jet engine mechanic!). They range from simple things you can do with household goods to more elaborate setups. I believe they sell a small sparkling rope that the birds interpret to be a snake and they dont mess with it. It's small and compact so your guests will never see it. Have fun and good luck!

A. yeah, they are very sociable animals. we had to have our male ferret put down and our female mourned for ages and stopped eating and kind of went into hibernation. we got another male and just to see how they would be together in terms of fighting etc we put them in the cage together and she started looking after him and started eating & playing again :) get another fetter, not to replace the other one but for a friend for your ferret you still have. hope this helps x.emily.x
