Television (TV) is a widely used telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images, either monochromatic ("black and white") or color, usually accompanied by sound. "Television" may also refer specifically to a television set, television programming or television transmission. The word is derived from mixed Latin and Greek roots, meaning "far sight": Greek tele (τῆλε), far, and Latin visio, sight (from video, vis- to see, or to view in the first person).

Commercially available since the late 1930s, the television set has become common in homes, businesses and institutions, particularly as a source of entertainment and news. Since the 1970s the availability of video cassettes, laserdiscs, DVDs and now Blu-ray Discs, have resulted in the television set frequently being used for viewing recorded as well as broadcast material.

Although other forms such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) are in use, the most common usage of the medium is for broadcast television, which was modeled on the existing radio broadcasting systems developed in the 1920s, and uses high-powered radio-frequency transmitters to broadcast the television signal to individual TV receivers.

Broadcast TV is typically disseminated via radio transmissions on designated channels in the 54–890 megahertz frequency band. Signals are now often transmitted with stereo and/or surround sound in many countries. Until the 2000s broadcast TV programs were generally recorded and transmitted as an analog signal, but in recent years public and commercial broadcasters have been progressively introducing digital television broadcasting technology.

A standard television set comprises multiple internal electronic circuits, including those for receiving and decoding broadcast signals. A visual display device which lacks a tuner is properly called a monitor, rather than a television. A television system may use different technical standards such as digital television (DTV) and high-definition television (HDTV). Television systems are also used for surveillance, industrial process control, and guiding of weapons, in places where direct observation is difficult or dangerous.

Amateur television (ham TV or ATV) is also used for experimentation, pleasure and public service events by amateur radio operators. Ham TV stations were on the air in many cities before commercial TV stations came on the air.

A shipment of 40 television sets contains 3 defective units. How many ways can a vending company can buy five?
Q. A shipment of 40 television sets contains 3 defective units. How many ways can a vending company can buy five of these units and receive no defective units. How would you go about solving this?

A. He first turns on 5 TVs. If they all are good, he quits. If there are one or more defective units he selects another set. If he now has 5 good ones he quits. If not he picks a seventh set. If he now has 5 good sets he quits. Otherwise he has four good sets and three bad sets so all of the rest are good and he just picks up one of them. Now he must have five good set. Of course he could just turn on eight sets while the first one is still warming up and he has to have five or more good sets. .

How and how often does television influence you?
Q. I'm not looking for generalizations or studies about the influence of television or movies. I want to know, specifically how has it affected your behavior in general, or in any given situation. Any characters that you try to emulate? Any mood that a show puts you in that you can stay in for days?

A. Those shows are entertaining, but as soon as I turn off the TV, then they are all forgotten until the next episode. I think commercials have more of an effect on me. I'm always looking to improve my life, and those commercials feed into that! Tight abs, nicer hair, better pictures, etc. Some of them are so ridiculous that they really stick in my mind too, like the gum one where the dad asks the babysitter if he can pay her in gum, as if it were the greatest thing in the world. Lol! "No one ever pays me in gum," the man at the end glumly says! I guess if a movie or show were really scary, I wouldn't be able to fall asleep for days. I have to leave the light on because you never know what awful thing could happen if I turn off the lights.
